What is Women’s Freemasonry
Emounah Lodge is an “Awakening School,” a place to discover ourselves: to understand who we are inside, how we interact with others, and how we can find our own light to guide ourselves and the world.
We work in the European, or Continental, tradition of Freemasonry, which honors freedom of conscience and welcomes open philosophical and spiritual inquiry. This Continental approach invites each woman to bring her own questions and her own path into the work of the Lodge.
Through symbolism and philosophical study, Freemasonry teaches us about our relationship with ourselves, with nature, with humankind, and with the universe.
Freemasonry is an unending journey, one of both personal discovery and shared exploration with others. It is an open book that each Sister reads in her own way, through the work of the Lodge and through the guidance of Sisters who have walked this path before her.
We are seekers of knowledge and universal truths. Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it political, and we do not discuss religion or politics in our meetings. What we offer instead is an invitation: to step into the unknown, to ask the questions that matter, and to see what you find when you go looking.
That search takes a specific shape in the Lodge.
Our Method
Freemasonry unfolds in stages, called initiations. Each initiation marks a passage, a step into new territory, both for the Lodge and for the woman moving through it.
At the center of our work is the study of symbols. Symbols don’t have fixed meanings Sisters memorize. Instead, each Sister engages with the symbols directly, forming her own associations and, at times, gaining distance from her own assumptions. Over time, this practice builds self-knowledge and a deeper understanding of others. Symbols are the visible form we use to reach for something less visible, something that can’t always be put into words.
An initiation isn’t something to read about. It’s something to experience.
What is Continental Freemasonry?
Continental, or European, Freemasonry is a tradition that emphasizes freedom of conscience above all else. Unlike some other Masonic traditions, we not require belief in a Supreme Being and welcome women from any philosophical or spiritual background. We encourage open inquiry, personal interpretation, and honest questioning as part of the path, rather than adherence to a single fixed doctrine.
What happens during a Masonic initiation?
An initiation is a rite of passage. It’s a symbolic experience marking and entry into a new stage of understanding. The meaning of an initiation unfolds through the experience itself rather than through explanation.
Do I need to be religious or spiritual to join?
No. Freemasonry is not a religion, and we do not discuss religion or politics in our meetings. What we ask instead is a genuine willingness to ask questions, reflect, and grow, whatever your personal beliefs or background may be.
